1. Change of address--send notification of your forwarding address to:
   • Post office

   • Magazine subscriptions (actual change usually requires several weeks)

2. Bank--Open a new account in your new city, transfer funds, arrange for check cashing.
3. Insurance--notify your agent of your new location for coverage: life, health, fire, auto.
4. Utility Companies--get refunds of any previous deposits made and arrange for service in your new town.
5. Medical, dental and school records--get referrals, ask for transfer of records. Get prescriptions for eyeglasses, copies of medical histories, X-rays.
6. Church clubs and other social and civic organizations--transfer memberships, get letters of introduction.
7. Route services--cancel newspaper and other delivery services.

Other preparations:

1. Empty and defrost your freezer and refrigerator. Use charcoal to dispel odors.
2. Have appliances serviced for moving.
3. Clean rugs or clothing.
4. Check with your moving company about various aspects of your move: insurance coverage, packing and unpacking costs, exact date of arrival of your belongings, method and date of expected payment, etc. (Get it in writing).
5. Plan for transporting your pets. Find out about special regulations for licenses, vaccinations, quarantine, etc., if applicable.
6. Purchase travelers checks for quick available funds.
7. Let a close friend or relative know your route and schedule that you will travel, including overnight stops. Use this person as a message headquarters.

On moving day:

1. Carry cash, jewelry and important documents yourself.
2. Double check closets, drawers, and shelves to be sure they are empty.
3. Leave all old keys with your real estate agent or new owner.
